| Li•ar \lï-er\ n : A person who makes untrue statements with the intent to deceive | |
Accusing someone of lying is serious business!
Lying is defined as the willful intent to mislead through false statements.Willful Intent
It is my contention that the individuals I have included on this site have an obligation to verify their facts with the same zeal with which they present them and that if they do make honest mistakes they should vigorously retract and correct them. Since many of the statements I have included here are often repeated I feel justified in considering these people to be willful liars.False Statements
There are several kinds of false statements that I deal with on this website:
Empirical statements such as, "He is 6 feet tall", can easily be tested to determine whether they are true or false.
Compound statements, that draw a correlation between separate events, can be very misleading.
"He smoked 4 packs a day until he died at the age of 37.",
takes on a whole different meaning when we add the fact that he was killed in a car accident.
Technicalities, that hide their blatant intent behind a veil of deniability.
"He never tells the truth and every word out of his mouth is false."
followed by: "I never called him a liar."
Implications, truthful statements that deliberately create a false impression.
"He was seen leaving the scene of the crime with two armed men."
would not lead one to believe that he was, in fact, a hostage.
Declarative statements that state an opinion as if it is a fact.
"He wore a yellow shirt because he hates asparagus."
when there was actually no indication as to why he wore a yellow shirt.
(This type of lie is often omitted from these pages as they are far too prevelant and there may be some legitimate assumption that the qualifier "I think" is assumed)
Statistical evidence must be judged based on the reliability and trustworthiness of its source.
"78% of the population believes that statistics can be used to proof anything".
I encourage that both the lies presented and my rebuttals be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. The Accused
Of course there are many in the media and in politics who can rightfully be accused of lying.
My choice of these individuals clearly reflects my personal and political biases. However, these people present themselves as extremely self-righteous paragons of virtue and each one of them consistently expresses their disdain for the indiscretions of those they disagree with. That hypocrisy combined with their divisive influence on the public discourse makes them worthy targets. The Facts
My purpose is to debunk lies by presenting well written and researched facts. It is not my intention to take credit for the writing presented as facts within this site. Much of it has been copied from other more able and talented authors.
